The ongoing problems in trade with the United States have been assured to be resolved quickly. A high-level US delegation will visit Bangladesh shortly to resolve the issues.

Sunday (August 25) at 12 o’clock in the secretariat finance adviser. US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Helen Lafave met with Salehuddin Ahmed. The advisor then briefed the journalists. He said that the US delegation had given such an assurance.

Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said, we have some other problems with them including GSP. US companies also had some complaints that they could not get their money. Again, many of our companies were banned in the United States. We have not discussed in depth today, but they have said that they have objections to some of the issues that we have pending. For example, labor laws. That said, we will see it soon.

Besides, they assured that other pending issues will be resolved quickly. There is a World Bank meeting ahead, I will discuss these issues again there.

He said that high-level visitors from the United States will come to Bangladesh. They will talk to us about other things. However, the adviser did not say anything about who or who will come.

When asked what was discussed about GSP, he said, we are not able to fulfill all the conditions of GSP. I have now given the statement, but it has not been seen. But these things are not so difficult for us. It will too.

America is very important to us. They help us in most sectors. They have large investments in coastal areas of Bangladesh. You will see that there are investments in coastal areas including Bagerhat, Pirojpur. But they are helping in different areas including agriculture sector. Basically, I told them to invest more in agriculture, energy, climate sector and other sectors.

He said, I have given special importance to the issue of flood in today’s discussion. You know they have some conditions especially with BGMEA and GSP to address challenges in the private sector. They urged to observe them.

Besides FDR, we will do our export, investment or direct investment and joint investment if we want. There was a discussion about what can be done in the technical sectors including the bases.

The financial adviser said, they said the negotiations were a little slow so far. We told them, we are in huge debt. But we have no debt with USA. All the help they gave was grand, not loans. From that point of view, we are not burdened by their debt. That’s why I asked them to help us. They will help quickly.
