Police Return to Work After Reaching Demands
The police in Bangladesh are returning to work after reaching an agreement with the government on a list of demands. The agreement was reached following a meeting between senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police on Sunday.
The police had gone on strike in response to a series of attacks on police stations and installations during recent protests. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 43 police officers and injured over 500.
The demands of the police included:
- Identification and prosecution of those responsible for attacking police facilities.
- Financial compensation for the families of slain officers, pensions for injured officers, and government employment for a family member.
- Transparent recruitment processes for police officers.
- Resolution of promotion complications.
- Reduction of working hours and payment of overtime.
- Increased risk allowance and payment of travel and daily allowances.
- Increased annual leave and financial compensation for unused leave.
- Reform of the Police Act and Regulations.
- Establishment of an independent police commission.
- Modernization of police stations and facilities.
- Improved living arrangements for police officers.
The police have agreed to return to work with effect from Sunday and have promised to accept the government’s assurances that their demands will be addressed.
