Aston Martin’s highly anticipated B-spec 2026 Formula 1 car, the AMR26B, made its on-track debut during opening practice at the crash.net, though the introduction was marred by a mechanical failure for Lance Stroll.
Aerodynamic Evolution and Technical Overhaul
The AMR26B represents a significant redesign for the Silverstone-based squad. According to Aston Martin team principal crash.net, the car is an aerodynamic evolution
featuring no fewer than 16 new items introduced in Budapest. While the layout, chassis, and front suspension remain the same as the original AMR26, the scale of the overhaul was extensive enough that the team had to submit a revised chassis for a new FIA crash test.
Trackside chief Mike Krack confirmed the breadth of the project, noting that the redesign focused heavily on aerodynamics and weight. The team viewed this package as a critical step forward after a period with no upgrades, which Krack stated is now over. The B-spec car follows a difficult start to the 2026 season, during which the team earned only one point across the first nine grand prix weekends.
On-Track Debut and Early Setbacks
The debut of the AMR26B was not without complications. The car’s arrival at the Hungaroring was delayed, with reports indicating it did not arrive until the evening before the event, leaving mechanics with significantly less preparation time. During Friday’s first practice, Fernando Alonso recorded the 13th-fastest time, though he remained 2.475 seconds off the pace.
The session was further disrupted when Lance Stroll suffered a suspected rear suspension failure that curtailed his running after just 11 laps. Newey described the failure as very unexpected,
noting that the area of the car that broke was not part of the components that had been changed in the upgrade package.
Strategic Outlook and Future Upgrades
The team is also awaiting a further performance boost following the summer break, when an upgraded Honda power unit is due to be introduced. Newey stressed a logical approach to solving problems rather than setting specific goals, noting that the team is currently working to build a cohesive culture to climb back into the midfield fight.
Context of the AMR26 Development
The push for the B-spec car comes after a series of poor results, including a race in Belgium where Stroll retired with a clutch failure and Alonso finished last, two laps behind the winner. The team has struggled with both reliability and performance, with Alonso frequently battling drivers from Cadillac at the back of the grid.
The technical leadership of Newey, who joined Aston Martin in 2025 as managing technical partner before becoming team principal, is central to this rebuild. The team’s ability to develop the car rapidly is seen as crucial, particularly as the 44-year-old Alonso remains undecided on signing a new contract beyond the current season.
