Time to wrap up

So that was it, the Aston Martin Tuesday before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

When was the last time there was so much excitement generated about an employee? Admittedly, an employee like Adrian Newey only rarely comes to a Formula 1 team, so that is completely understandable.

Thank you very much for your attention today, and I point you to tomorrow’s Formula 1 live ticker with my colleague Norman Fischer.

For now, have a great evening, and see you soon!

Sincerely,
your Kevin Scheuren

The story of a team

Aston Martin has a big day today, the entire Formula 1 world is looking at them, wondering if the former Jordan team can really make it to the top.

A illustrious history that the team from Silverstone can look back on, which we can review together in our little photo series.

Is “El Plan” still on?

One person who has high hopes for Adrian Newey’s appointment is Fernando Alonso.

After the Spaniard had a spectacular start to last season, thoughts arose that he could potentially be in contention for his third World Championship title. However, developments at Aston Martin have taken a different direction.

But if Newey comes, many things will improve; you could sense this from Alonso’s passionate speech. Newey is sure he will “make everyone in the team better”.

Is there still a chance for “El Plan”?

Excitement in the paddock

At Williams, a former team of Adrian Newey, there is joy that the design mastermind of Formula 1 remains, and this has been communicated with a picture on social media.

A career in pictures

Adrian Newey will take up his position at Aston Martin in early March 2025 and will try by all means to transform the team, which originated from teams like Jordan, Spyker, Midland, Force India and Racing Point, into a championship-winning team.

It is another station in an illustrious career that we can once again recall together in the photo series.

The passion is there

One thing is clear, Adrian Newey is passionate about his work. In a somewhat longer monologue, he explained how the timeline went to the current state and the announcement of the Aston Martin deal.

In April, he decided to leave Red Bull, which was during the Suzuka weekend, and he didn’t really know what would come next. He wanted to take a bit of a break and hoped to get an idea of what he wanted to do while showering. His wife was also worried that he might be home for too long, so he decided at the end of June to consider his options.

Since he was 10 years old, he wanted to work as a designer in motorsport; he has achieved this, even though he certainly did not enjoy every day of his career. He loves the challenge of pushing a car to its maximum, which motivates him and he hopes to achieve the same with Aston Martin.

Newey the bargain

The decision for Aston Martin as “Managing Technical Partner” was an easy one for Adrian Newey, because he loves technology and the opportunity to work with it at a whole new level.

According to Lawrence Stroll, he will lead an ambitious technical team and will have a long-term involvement as a shareholder and partner. When asked if it was a significant investment, Stroll referred to him as “a bargain” because he will contribute much more in the long run than he costs initially.

From arch-enemies to friends

Adrian Newey will work with Fernando Alonso for the first time, which almost happened in 2009 at Red Bull, “but unfortunately that didn’t work out,” Newey said at his presentation in Silverstone.

“For me, it’s a great opportunity to work professionally with Adrian,” said Fernando Alonso, who was also briefly brought on stage.

Lance Stroll is looking forward to working with someone who “has won more titles than anyone else in the paddock.”

Newey, the genius

In half an hour, Aston Martin will hold a press conference to announce Adrian Newey as a prominent newcomer for next year and beyond.

On Sky Sports F1 in the UK, this move has been discussed all morning, and Sky expert Martin Brundle aptly summarized why Newey could be the right man for Aston:

“He has the nasty habit of being involved in several world championships on the chassis side with his last three teams, 12 Constructors’ and 13 Drivers’ titles. He is known in the business as something of a genius. He tends to bring success with him.”

The pencil is sharpened!

Aston Martin has released another hype video about what we all expect at 12 PM German time, namely the announcement of Adrian Newey’s signing.

A mysterious figure with a sharpened pencil at a drawing board is shown. Well, who could that be?

In the end, I really think the figure looks a bit like Lord Voldemort, doesn’t it?

Clear goals

Where Aston Martin wants to go, McLaren has already arrived. With hard work, some changes in leadership and also with the drivers, and a clear plan, the team from Woking has made its way back to the top of Formula 1.

Zak Brown, McLaren CEO, also confidently states that the goal is always to win races, even if the competition is anything but asleep. This also applies to the upcoming two races:

“We will certainly face a lot of headwinds, but we have shown that we have a good car – under all conditions and across all types of tracks,” the American told Sky UK. The coming tracks especially give hope: “We were very strong in Singapore last year. Baku is always a crazy race.”

More statements from Zak Brown can be found in the detailed report.

Newey knows about championship-winning cars

Adrian Newey knows what he’s doing. The Brit is regarded as one of the smartest minds in the history of Formula 1 when it comes to designing a car capable of becoming a champion.

Recently, the aerodynamic rule reform and the comeback of ground effect cars have allowed Max Verstappen to become Formula 1 World Champion twice in a row relatively unchallenged. Since Newey is no longer actively working on the RB20, the performance has declined. Coincidence?

In our photo series, you can take a look at the championship-winning cars of Adrian Newey. Lawrence Stroll surely hopes that one will be added in British Racing Green, and maybe even that his son Lance will be sitting in it.
