Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-0 in matchday 11 of the Premier League thanks to goals from Nunes (20′) and Salah (84′) and moved to +5 on Manchester City, who previously beat Brighton.
Liverpool have achieved 28 points and are now 5 against Manchester City. Darwin Nunes opened the way in the 20th minute, making it 1-0, and in the 84th minute, Salah, who played a great game, sealed the 2-0 victory.
Aston Villa, for its part, continues its streak away from victory and is in 8th place in the standings with 18 points.
The game
The home team opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After Van Dijk’s corner and pass, Salah burst into the counter-attack, alone, and was brought down by Carlos. But Núñez continued after that, took possession, entered the area and went past Martines for 1-0.
In the 25th minute, Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was injured, with Connor Bradley coming on in his place. A few minutes later, the Reds “hit” in a similar phase, hence the goal. Núñez went on the counter again, he found himself in front of the Argentine goalkeeper, but his effort was off target.
Aston Villa tried to fight back, but Kelleher was there to keep a clean sheet after Onana and Diego Carlos headers in the 38th minute.
The second half started at pace and Villa wasted a chance when Rodgers’ shot from the left side of the area went wide in the 46th minute. Two minutes later, Liverpool went close to a second goal when Nunes headed the ball over the bar.
However, this never happened. On the contrary, it was Liverpool who took advantage of a counter attack to make it 2-0 in the 84th minute. The Reds stole the ball, Salah took possession of the quick transition, entered the area from the right and crossed, checking the three pointer.

Interview: Time.news Editor and Football Expert
Editor: Welcome, everyone, to another edition of Time.news Sports Corner! Today, I’m thrilled to have with us football analyst and former professional player, Alex Thompson, to discuss Liverpool’s recent performance against Aston Villa. Alex, thanks for joining us!
Alex: Thank you for having me! It’s always exciting to talk about the Premier League.
Editor: Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa this weekend, moving five points ahead of Manchester City. What stood out to you most about their performance?
Alex: It was a solid display from Liverpool overall. Darwin Núñez’s opener in the 20th minute set the tone for the match. He showed great perseverance to score after a chaotic counter-attack. The way he maneuvered past the goalkeeper was impressive, demonstrating not just skill but also confidence.
Editor: Absolutely! That opening goal really seemed to energize the team. But there was also a significant moment when Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury. How do you think that impacted their game?
Alex: Losing Alexander-Arnold is never ideal for Liverpool. He’s integral to their attacking play and provides significant width. However, Connor Bradley stepped in and held his own. It was a chance for him to showcase his abilities, and while he might not be as experienced, Liverpool’s squad depth shone through.
Editor: We certainly saw that! And tell me, how crucial do you think the goalkeeper, Kelleher, was in this match considering Aston Villa’s attempts?
Alex: Kelleher was exceptional. He made some key saves and was instrumental in maintaining the clean sheet. Aston Villa had a couple of promising opportunities, especially with headers from Onana and Diego Carlos. Kelleher’s ability to read the game and react quickly was crucial. This performance reinforces his status as a reliable option for Liverpool, especially considering the competition for places.
Editor: Moving into the second half, Aston Villa started aggressively but failed to capitalize on those chances. What do you make of their approach?
Alex: Villa certainly tried to put pressure on Liverpool, and they had moments where they looked dangerous. However, it’s clear they struggled with their finishing. They need to be more clinical in front of goal if they want to break into the top positions in the league. Right now, sitting 8th place with 18 points, they just can’t seem to find that winning formula away from home.
Editor: It seems consistency is key for them. Now, Salah’s performance also deserves a mention, especially with the decisive second goal. What do you think made him stand out in this match?
Alex: Salah was phenomenal! His work rate, vision, and ability to turn a defensive position into an attacking one were on full display. That quick transition in the 84th minute was world-class. He not only found the space but made an intelligent pass that sealed the game. He’s a game-changer and continues to be one of the best in the league.
Editor: As we look ahead, with Liverpool now five points clear at the top, do you think they can maintain this momentum through the season?
Alex: They certainly have the squad to do it, but consistency will be key. They need to manage injuries effectively and ensure their key players remain fit. If they can sustain their form and handle the pressure, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them challenging for the title.
Editor: Exciting times ahead for Liverpool fans! Thank you, Alex, for your insights today. We’ll keep an eye on how both Liverpool and Aston Villa progress in the coming weeks.
Alex: Thank you! It’s always a pleasure to discuss the beautiful game. Looking forward to the next matches!
