From Whirlpool to the Shoah, all the proposals of the historic ArciMovie review. Students meet industry-leading authors, directors, actors and intellectuals

Of Ida Palisi

DTwo musical biopics, an unprecedented point of view on the Holocaust and a documentary on the former Whirlpool factory are among the most interesting proposals of the thirteenth edition of the historic AstraDoc review curated as a practice by Arci Movie at the Academy Astra cinema.

An awaited appointment, traditionally dedicated to students (which this year will also be present as film critics, thanks to the collaboration with the Federico II University and the Academy of Fine Arts), but over the years expanded to a cultured and cinephile audience, which in the hall in via Mezzocannone the possibility of dealing with actors, directors and scholars, as well as seeing documentaries of great emotional impact, applauded at international festivals.

The opening film will be «Three minutes – A lengthening» by Bianca Stigter, applauded in Venice and screened on Friday at 20.30. The documentary is inspired by a short three-minute amateur film in sixteen millimeters shot in 1938 and found by chance in a wardrobe, to tell the tragic fate of Nasielsk, a Polish community inhabited mainly by Jews, almost all of whom were then slaughtered by the Nazis (a the president of the Campania Film Commission, Titta Fiore, Titti Marrone, Andrea Mazzucchi and Guido D’Agostino, commented it in the room, on the occasion of Memorial Day).

«One of the characteristics of our review – explains Roberto D’Avascio, president of Arci Movie – is the search for bottom-up and indie productions, don’t land on mainstream distribution despite being trendy». Both Italian and foreign creative and artistic documentaries (in the original language) as an alternative to the docu-fiction episodes that are all the rage on Netflix and Sky.

«The exhibition, as usual, is divided into three axes: Naples, Italy, the world – explains the curator Antonio Borrelli – and tells of reality through cinema». Thus there are strong political and social stories, such as the story of the former Whirlpool – with the narrative voice of Alessandro Siani – in “Via Argine 310” by Gianfranco Pannone (on February 3 with the writer Maurizio de Giovanni and the musician Daniele Sepe), that of the G8 in Genoa revived by «Se fate i bravo» by Stefano Collizzolli and Daniele Gaglianone (10 February) and a look at the Lgbtqi community with the historic leader Franco Grillini who will be in theaters on 3 March for «Let’s kiss » by Filippo Vendemmiati.

Great expectations then for the biopics: the musical ones like the February 17 «Franco Battiato – The master’s voice» by Marco Spagnoli and the following Friday the one dedicated to David Bowie, «Moonage daydream» by Brett Moergen. On March 10 there will be a tribute by Charlotte Gainsbourg to her mother Jane Birkin with «Jane by Charlotte» and on March 17 this first part of the screenings will be closed by «Cipria» the latest film by Giovanni Piperno, a story of women in the Second World War. The review will then resume on March 24 and end on May 12.
