jpnn.com – AstraZeneca in Indonesia is committed to realizing the company’s zero carbon ambition. One of them is by transitioning the operational fleet from gasoline-powered vehicles to environmentally friendly electric vehicles in Indonesia since last year.

In October 2023, AstraZeneca together with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and local partners launched the AstraZeneca operational fleet transition program with the transition process taking place in stages until the end of 2024. And based on distribution that will depend on electric vehicle production and internal readiness.

AstraZeneca Indonesia President Director Esra Erkomay said this is the company’s commitment to the environment to help lead the decarbonization movement in the healthcare sector. This is marked by the historic Sustainable Healthcare Pledge led by AstraZeneca during the company’s thematic session at the Indonesia Sustainability Forum 2023 and continues until the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024.

“There are new facts that predict the number of heat-related deaths could more than triple by 2050 if we do not take significant action to protect the planet,” Esra said in an official statement, Sunday (15/9).

He continued that a sharp increase in heart and metabolic conditions, cancer, and respiratory diseases related to environmental factors could be seen.

As a real proof of the company, AstraZeneca has targeted the transition of all operational fleets in Indonesia to electric vehicles or EVs to be completed by the end of the year. As of August, more than 200 vehicles or 50 percent have been converted to EVs.

“The estimated reduction from operational vehicles reaches up to 900 metric tons of carbon emissions and we support the government’s initiative to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by partnering with local electric vehicle manufacturers,” said Esra.

The transportation sector is the second largest contributor to greenhouse gases (27%), which is still dominated by fossil fuels. Reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector is one of the main agendas to achieve Indonesia’s zero emission target by 2060.

AstraZeneca is committed to achieving zero carbon by transitioning its operational fleet of petrol-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.
