Astronauts “fly” to Mars without leaving the Earth

by time news

NASA began an experimental “flight” to Mars in a room located at the Space Center. Johnson in Houston, Texas. Four volunteers embarked on a 45-day simulated journey to the Red Planet to study the negative effects of isolation and prolonged exposure to confined spaces on the physical and mental health of future mission participants.

Phobos, one of the moons of Mars, is a conditional “landing” place. During the experiment, the harsh conditions of real space flights will be simulated – for example, astronauts will have to operate in conditions of a short-term (up to 5 minutes) interruption of communication with the Earth.

This is the second of four planned flight simulations aimed at studying the “behavioral aspects of crew work.” The last experiment is scheduled for September this year. And for the current astronauts, the “flight” will end on March 14, when the hatch covering their “spaceship” will be opened.
