Astros GM on the team’s bullpen needs and star player updates at the Winter Meetings

by time news

Dana Brown, the general manager of the Houston Astros, spoke to reporters at the Winter Meetings on Monday, addressing the team’s ongoing quest to secure bullpen help and a backup catcher. Brown also addressed rumors surrounding star third baseman Alex Bregman, confirming that the team has no intention of trading him.

Bregman, along with second baseman Jose Altuve, will be free agents after next season, and the Astros are eager to solidify their roster in their bid to return to the World Series. However, Brown revealed that there have been no recent extension discussions with Bregman, Altuve, or other key players like Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez.

The team’s need for relief pitching comes in the wake of several free agents in the bullpen, including Hector Neris, Phil Maton, and Ryne Stanek. Brown emphasized that the team is looking for cost-effective solutions and expressed confidence in internal options, as well as in former top prospect Forrest Whitley, who may transition to a relief role.

Despite the challenges posed by injuries to key players such as Lance McCullers Jr. and Luis Garcia, Brown provided an optimistic outlook, indicating that both players are targeting a return to action in July. Additionally, veteran reliever Kendall Graveman is on track to resume throwing after a shoulder injury.

The Astros are approaching the offseason with a focus on strengthening their roster, and Brown’s comments shed light on the team’s priorities as they prepare for the upcoming season.
