Houston Astros owner Jim Crane announced the hiring of Randy Flores as general manager on October 31, 2026, ending a two-month search after Dana Brown’s departure. Flores, a former Cardinals executive, replaces Brown and inherits a roster needing upgrades.
Flores’ Background and Cardinals Legacy
Flores, a former left-handed pitcher who played 350 MLB games from 2002-10, joined the Cardinals’ front office in 2015 as director of scouting. He became assistant general manager in 2019, overseeing amateur and professional acquisitions. His work included drafting stars like Tommy Edman and Lars Nootbaar. Throughout the entire interview process, we’ve been thoroughly impressed with Randy and his background in scouting and player acquisition,
Crane said. Flores will now lead the Astros’ efforts to address a roster with aging stars and a need for fresh talent.

Flores was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1997 out of USC, where he won 42 games, a school record. He pitched for the Cardinals, Rockies, Rangers, and Twins, winning a World Series title with St. Louis in 2006. After retiring, he earned a master’s degree in postsecondary administration from USC and founded OnDeck Digital, a sports video technology company. The Cardinals hired him in August 2015 as their scouting director to replace Chris Correa, who was later imprisoned for hacking into the Astros’ database.
In 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Flores helped build a roster that won at a .538 clip, capturing three division titles and five postseason berths. His drafting acumen included selecting Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker, Masyn Winn, Dylan Carlson, and Brendan Donovan. Randy has had a huge impact on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons,
Crane said. We’re happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros and we can’t wait to get to work on bringing another championship to Houston,
he added.
Now that former Cardinals assistant GM Randy Flores is the Houston Astros GM, Cardinals coaches Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay are natural candidates for their managerial vacancy.
Cardinals Lose Key Executive, Astros Gain Leadership
Flores’ departure from the Cardinals, where he worked under John Mozeliak and Chaim Bloom, leaves a void in St. Louis’ front office. For the Astros, Flores’ appointment marks a change from the tenure of Dana Brown. Brown’s exit followed a failed trade attempt involving Bryan Abreu, according to reports.
They face challenges including Yordan Alvarez and Josh Hader, alongside aging players like Jose Altuve. Flores’ first tasks include finding a new manager and addressing payroll decisions. I am excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity,
Flores said, adding, The Astros have a long winning tradition under Jim Crane.
Randy Flores has been hired as the Astros new general manager, Astros Owner and Chairman Jim Crane announced today. He becomes the 15th general manager in franchise history.
Challenges and Opportunities for the Astros
The Astros face a critical offseason with decisions on long-term extensions for players like Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez.
Flores’ first major move will be selecting a manager to replace Joe Espada, whose contract wasn’t renewed after three seasons. Potential candidates include Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay, both former Cardinals coaches. The Astros also need to address their pitching staff, which suffered injuries and underperformance. We’re happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros,
Crane said, expressing confidence in his ability to handle these challenges.

The Astros still feature star players in presumptive 2026 AL MVP Yordan Alvarez, shortstop Jeremy Peña, second baseman Jose Altuve, and closer Josh Hader. They also have quality pieces like third baseman Isaac Paredes, reliever AJ Blubaugh, outfielder Cam Smith, and starting pitcher Hunter Brown. However, the team’s three everyday corner infielders—Correa, Isaac Paredes, and Christian Walker—pose a roster puzzle for Flores.
Transition and Future Outlook
The Astros also considered candidates like White Sox assistant GM Josh Barfield and former Nationals GM Mike Rizzo. Randy Flores has been hired as the Astros’ new general manager,

The Astros’ 2026 season saw them win their fifth division title in six years despite an 81-81 record. They reached the playoffs in 10 of the past 12 seasons, winning World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. However, their postseason performance has faltered, with a nine-game homestand collapse prompting Brown’s departure.
With Flores at the helm, the focus shifts to his ability to rebuild a team that once dominated the AL but now contends with a competitive division and an aging core. I want to thank the Cardinals organization for the opportunities and support that made this next chapter possible. My family and I are excited to make Houston home,
Flores said.

The hiring ends a search that lasted roughly two months. Flores will be introduced to the media at a press conference Monday at Daikin Park. The Astros also need to address their coaching staff, including the bench coach role, as they look to rebuild under new leadership.
