Astrud Gilberto, one of the most internationally known bossa nova voices, has died at the age of 83. The information was shared by the profile of his granddaughter, Sofía Gilberto, on social networks.

“I have come to bring the sad news that my grandmother became a star today. And she is next to my grandfather João Gilberto,” says the text.

Astrud Gilberto became known worldwide for having sung “The Girl from Ipanema”, the English version of the classic “Garota de Ipanema”. For this album, she became the first woman to win the Grammy for song of the year in the United States, along with saxophonist Stan Getz, in 1965.

That year, the album “Getz/Gilberto,” a collaboration between the American musician and João Gilberto, won album of the year, and Astrud was nominated in the new artist category.

Born in Salvador on March 29, 1940, Astrud Evangelina Weinert was married to João Gilberto between 1959 and 1964, when she began to sing. Like Tom Jobim, she is one of the artists featured on “Getz / Gilberto”, an album that marked the rapprochement of bossa nova with jazz and also the entry of the Brazilian genre into the US market.
