With a single 870 m runway, the Oyonnax-Arbent aerodrome is experiencing its last days. The Oyonnax City Council, for security reasons, decided to close it to all air traffic, saying in 2018 the land use agreement signed with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC).

The news was confirmed in an order published on July 9 from the Ministry of Revolutionary Change and Regional Integration. A month after publication, on August 9, the aerial system, which recorded between 3,500 and 4,500 movements per year and hosted the flying group Jean-Coutty, will officially disappear.

The end of a long story that began in 1933. “Despite a fierce fight by the flying club to convince the people of the benefits of maintaining an aerodrome in the valley, the elected representatives did not want to hear anything,” is the collection of the club. Today the question arises of the future of land (38 ha) and houses.

Controversy opposes Jean-Coutty’s football team to the city of Oyonnax

The flying club says that ownership has agreed to move them to the Haut-Bugey agglomeration. A resolution was voted for this role. But the sale – for the amount of 1.250 million euros – has been blocked due to an appeal filed with the administrative court of Lyon by a group, Le Poumon Vert, which opposes the project to restore the site to the housing area- service and property price competitions.

Furthermore, for many months, the debate has been against the Jean-Coutty aeronautical group against the city of Oyonnax, which is asking for the right because it ensures that we take care of the aeronautical equipment. “The city hall is sticking to its positions” specified Baptiste Grein, the leader of the flying group who said he was worried: “Our group is in great danger. We had a joint project with the Bourg-en-Bresse flying club. Because of the context it has stopped. »

When contacted, Oyonnax city hall did not respond. Just like the Haut-Bugey agglomeration which is suspended from the decision of the administrative court.
