Explosives on the tarmac of Caen airport: this is the threat received the editorial staff of France 3 Normandie on the night of Thursday November 16 to Friday November 17, in an anonymous letter signed by “French environmental activists”. Air traffic was interrupted Friday morning, and “the interdepartmental mine clearance service is on site to resolve doubts on the tarmac and in the airport buildings after individuals broke into the tarmac”declared the Calvados prefecture to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

In their anonymous letter, the signatories claim an intrusion into the airport grounds to “denounce environmental absurdity [du transport aérien] ». “Explosives have been placed around the tarmac and will be detonated at 12 p.m. We leave it to you to notify the police and the airport management so that the damage is only material”they say in the letter cited by France 3 Normandie.

“The tarmac, like the buildings, is subject to meticulous control. Due to the extent of the area to be secured, the airport remains closed until the investigations are completed.the prefecture said on Friday on X. Several flights were canceled or diverted to Rennes and Deauville, announced the airport.

Bomb threats multiply

According to local media, firefighters and deminers had been inspecting airport facilities since early morning while police officers blocked access to the airport to travelers arriving there.

After the attack which cost the life of teacher Dominique Bernard in Arras on October 13, many French airports had already been the subject of bomb threats in October. On October 19, fourteen of them had been targeted by threats of attack, and at least 11 had carried out evacuations, leading to flight cancellations and countless delays.
