CRITIQUE – Keiichiro Shibuya presents Android Opera Mirror, starring Alter 4, an android who can sing, improvise and synchronize with the monks accompanying him on stage. A look back at a unique creative process.

The composer Keiichiro Shibuya strolls through the halls of the Châtelet, escorted by his producer. It looks like it came out of a manga. Too long jacket, on thin legs punctuated by black trainers with huge soles. For a month he has been staying to prepare his Android Opera Mirror, at the Châtelet, he was given an office upholstered in white paneling with moldings that overlooks the square. He works there framed by three elements. On the right a piano, on the left a console, in the background a table with a computer. A rotating chair allows him to move from one to the other. The man who converses with artificial intelligence (AI) is a bit of an exception in these venerable walls. “In Japan, it’s the ordinary lot of creators to rely on AI”he says.
