Landslides triggered by heavy rains in mountainous northern Vietnam have buried a 16-seater van and killed at least 11 people, Reuters and BTA reported.
Rescue teams, including soldiers and citizens of Ha Giang province, found 11 dead and four injured passengers, the state-run Vietnam News Agency reported.
Local authorities said the exact number of people in the van was unknown and the effects of heavy rains were complicating rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin urgently ordered local governments and related government agencies to immediately deal with the effects of the disaster and be ready to respond to further floods and landslides.
According to data from the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasts, about 280 mm of rain fell in the area in the last 24 hours. The agency warned of the risk of flash floods, landslides due to floods or currents in Hajiang, Laokai, Tuenkuang and Yenbai provinces.
Every year, floods and typhoons kill hundreds of people in Vietnam, according to Reuters. Last year, natural disasters killed 389 people and injured 668, according to government data.
