At least 22 people were killed in an attack by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (SSP) on the town of Fasher, Reuters reported.
It is the deadliest attack in recent weeks, during which the fighting has died down.
The pro-democracy movement “Resistance Committee” wrote on Facebook that the SBP shelled markets, hospitals and homes with artillery and that they attacked one of the city’s medical facilities with a drone, BTA reported.
Fasher is home to the last fortified positions of the Sudanese regular army within the western Darfur region, and the city is central to the development of Sudan’s civil war, which has sparked the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
The “Resistance Committee” indicated that 22 bodies of victims of today’s attack have been recovered so far, but the death toll is expected to rise.
The SBP has not yet commented on the situation, but paramilitary forces have attacked civilian targets before, Reuters notes.
According to the UN, more than 300,000 residents of Fasher have left their homes because of the fighting in the area.
