The European Union will make “significant donations” to help restore electricity and heating in Ukraine

The European Union (EU) will “intensify its efforts, including with partners, to help restore electricity and heating for the population” in Ukraine, said on Friday TwitterEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a statement, she said the EU was preparing “currently the delivery to Ukraine as soon as possible of important donations by the Member States”. Mme von der Leyen clarified that the EU would provide:

two hundred medium-sized transformers and one large autotransformer from Lithuania; a medium-sized autotransformer from Latvia; forty heavy generators from the EU reserve located in Romania. Each of these generators can provide uninterrupted power to a small to medium sized hospital.

Mr Zelensky also said on Twitter that he had discussed with the President of the European Commission cooperation to ensure the energy stability of his country.

Separately, Finnish Economy Minister Mika Lintila said his country could send the first batch of energy equipment to Ukraine next week thanks to donations from energy companies.

“Yesterday I asked companies to donate equipment and today companies responded positively to the request”Mr. Lintila wrote on Twitter.
