At least 34 people, including 19 women and children, were killed overnight and today in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, which hit a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) that shelters displaced Palestinian families, as well as two houses. This was reported by the Associated Press, citing representatives of local hospitals.
This afternoon, the deadliest strike was carried out targeting the UNRWA Preparatory School for Boys “Al Jawni” in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
According to the Israeli military, their strike was aimed at Hamas fighters who were planning attacks from inside the school. But this statement could not be confirmed by independent sources, the Associated Press notes.
At least 14 people died in the strike, including 2 children and a woman, whose bodies were brought to the nearby “Al-Awda” and “Al-Aqsa” hospitals, the two medical facilities said. According to them, at least 18 people were injured in the attack, BTA reported.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians driven from their homes by Israeli attacks and evacuation orders live in schools in the Gaza Strip. The al-Jawni school, one of many in Gaza run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, has been the target of multiple strikes over the course of the war. Israel frequently bombs schools it says are used by Hamas fighters, the Associated Press notes.
