At least four people have died in Vietnam after Asia’s strongest storm this year made landfall in the north of the country after passing through China’s Hainan Island and the Philippines, Vietnam’s National Weather Service said, as quoted by Reuters.

Typhoon Yagi hit the island regions of northern Vietnam around 1:00pm local time, packing winds of up to 100 miles per hour near the center of the storm, after losing some strength from a maximum of 140 miles per hour on the island Hainan a day earlier.

The Vietnamese government said that as of 5:00 p.m. local time, the death toll from the typhoon was at least 4 and 78 people were injured. At least a dozen more people have disappeared at sea, according to Vietnamese state media, BTA reported.

Yagi has already killed at least two people on China’s Hainan Island and 16 people in the Philippines, the first country to hit after forming east of the archipelago earlier in the week. Thus, the total number of people who died as a result of the typhoon in this area now becomes at least 22 people.
