At least 50 people died today in floods caused by heavy rains in the northern Afghan province of Baghlan, the spokesman of the Ministry of Interior said, quoted by Reuters. He added that the number of victims could increase.
The spokesman told Reuters that at least five districts of Baghlan were flooded after the torrential rains, and some families were still stranded and needed urgent help.
He added that two more strong storms were forecast overnight Friday into Saturday.
“The Ministry of the Interior has sent teams and helicopters to the area, but since the helicopters do not have night vision searchlights, the (rescue) operation may not be successful,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by BTA.
