At least four people died and others were injured on Saturday evening in Dadeville, a small town in Alabama (southern United States), after shooting at a teenager’s birthday party. According to local media citing law enforcement, the shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. (0330 GMT Sunday), and was aimed at the Mahogany Masterpiece, a downtown dance hall.

A teenager celebrated her sixteenth birthday there on Saturday night, the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper reported. Her brother, a high school student, was among those killed, their grandmother told the daily. He was a teenager without history, “who always had a smile”, she confided. This drama “is something that no city should have to know”, regretted the police chief of Dadeville, Jonathan Floyd.

Crimes “that have no place in our state”

This small municipality of 3,000 inhabitants is located in the rural South of the United States, northeast of Montgomery, capital of Alabama.

“Violent crime has no place in our state,” responded Republican Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, expressing her “pain” on Twitter. The Republican claimed to be “Kept informed” by the police, without however communicating an official report. The latter have not yet indicated whether a suspect was in custody and the motive also remains to be clarified. Investigators believe an altercation led to the tragedy, according to WRBL.

The United States pays a very heavy price for the dissemination of firearms on its territory and the ease with which Americans have access to them. The country has more individual weapons than inhabitants: one in three adults owns at least one weapon and almost one in two adults lives in a home where there is a weapon.

The consequence of this proliferation is the very high rate of death by firearm in the United States, without comparison with that of other developed countries.
