Heavy rains, causing floods and landslides, have killed at least fourteen people in Nepal, while nine people are missing, police announced on Sunday (July 7).
Floods in neighboring India, and Bangladesh, also caused widespread damage and affected millions of people. “The police are working with other agencies and residents to find the missing people”Dan Bahadur Karki, the police spokesman said.
Nepalese authorities have warned of fresh flash floods in several rivers after the heavy rains observed since Wednesday. Flooding has been reported in many areas down the border with India. In June, fourteen people were killed in the Himalayan country during severe storms that caused landslides, lightning and floods.
Two million people affected by floods in Bangladesh
In India, floods in the northeastern state of Assam have killed six people in the past 24 hours, the disaster management authority said on Sunday. This brings the number of deaths to fifty-eight due to the rains that have rained since the middle of May in the country.
In Bangladesh, a small country located downstream from India, more than two million people have been affected by the floods, the disaster management agency said. Much of this country is made up of deltas, with the Himalayan rivers of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra flowing there towards the sea after crossing India.
Eclipses from June to September cause death and destruction across South Asia each year, but in recent years the number of deadly floods and landslides has increased. Experts say climate change and road construction are exacerbating the problem.
