A shooting inside a Jehovah’s Witness church in the Alsterdorf area of Hamburg this Thursday night leaves a provisional balance of at least seven dead and several injured. The attack occurred around 9:00 p.m. in the Gross Borstel neighborhood, in the center of the city. According to some sources, the perpetrators of the shots have fled.
A strong deployment of police, health services and firefighters has come to the scene. The area has been cordoned off and several streets have been closed to traffic. The authorities have warned that there is an “extreme danger”, for which they have asked the neighbors to remain inside their homes to thus facilitate the work of the security forces. They have also asked citizens to “only use the emergency phone in extreme cases so that the lines do not collapse.” Police sources have indicated that “all the dead have gunshot wounds.”
The Hamburg Police have published a message on their official Twitter profile assuring that at the moment “there is no reliable information about the motive for the crime.” In addition, it has urged the population not to disseminate information that may be false.
The mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, has declared that “the police are working at full speed to pursue the perpetrators and clarify the background of the incident.” In turn, he has expressed his dismay at what happened and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
