President Donald Trump faced repeated hecklers during a campaign rally at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio on Wednesday night, pausing mid-speech to urge Texas voters to back Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton amid a tight midterm race.
Protests and Stage Disruptions at Freeman Coliseum
Wednesday’s campaign stop in San Antonio drew intense opposition both inside and outside the venue. At least half a dozen demonstrators interrupted the president during his remarks at the Freeman Coliseum, with security and police removing individuals from the arena. One protester attempted to approach the stage before officers intervened and escorted him out.
Trump briefly stepped away from the microphone during the disturbances. He’s going back home to mom,
the president said after one ejection, adding, But what he doesn’t know is his mom voted for Trump.
Supporters in cowboy hats attempted to drown out the demonstrations by chanting USA,
while Trump told the individuals to get out and claimed without evidence that they were paid by enemies of our nation. Outside the venue, separate demonstrations organized by the Bexar County Democratic Party and the Party for Socialism and Liberation gathered along Houston Street to voice opposition to administration policies on immigration, food assistance, and healthcare.

Destiney Pena, a community organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, stated that her group turned out to speak against policies harming local residents, pointing to mass deportations as well as reductions in Medicaid and food assistance. Individual attendees like Rudy Rodriguez voiced independent concerns regarding family separation and the candidate endorsement for Paxton. State Representative Josey Garcia of House District 124 and State Senator Roland Gutierrez of Senate District 19 also participated in the demonstrations, noting that financial pressures and agricultural hardships were driving public frustration.
San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones had requested a meeting with the president ahead of the visit to address local poverty and affordability concerns, pointing out that federal policies on grocery and fuel expenses heavily impact the community alongside immigration enforcement activities. The San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office provided significant traffic and security operations for the presidential visit, which included temporary flight restrictions over Kelly Field enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Senate Race Between Ken Paxton and James Talarico
The primary purpose of Trump’s visit was to rally support for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who secured the Republican nomination after defeating the former GOP Senate whip earlier in the cycle. National party attention has converged on Texas as Democrats mount a serious challenge to hold the traditionally red seat.
A New York Times/Siena College poll released over the weekend showed Democratic state representative James Talarico leading Paxton 51% to 45% among likely voters. Texas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, and Trump won the state by nearly 14 percentage points in 2024. Throughout the evening, Trump targeted his Democratic opponent, repeatedly referring to him as Tala-freako
and attacking his background.

Mr President, I want to thank you for coming for me, for coming for us, and for coming for Texas. We are going to win this race.
Ken Paxton, Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate candidate
Republicans have poured more than $300 million into election efforts across Texas this cycle. Outside political advertising has accounted for nearly $175 million to support the GOP’s efforts to preserve control of the Senate seat. Other political figures appearing at the venue included congressional candidates Brandon Herrera and Chris Gober, alongside U.S. Representatives Randy Webber, Nathaniel Moran, and Michael Cloud, and Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian. Monica De La Cruz was also a candidate present.
Low Trump Approval Ratings Coincide with Abbott Absence
The rally highlighted the complex political headwinds facing Republicans in the state's most populous reliably red territory. A Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Monday placed Trump’s approval rating at 32%, with registered voters preferring Democrats 44% to 37%.
Those national currents were highlighted by the absence of Republican Governor Greg Abbott. A three-term governor who won reelection in 2022 by roughly 11 percentage points, Abbott is locked in a competitive reelection race against Democratic state Representative Gina Hinojosa. Instead of appearing alongside Trump in San Antonio, Abbott attended the dedication of a hospital roughly 330 miles away, drawing immediate attention from Democratic opponents.
In addition to stumping for Paxton, Trump addressed broader federal issues during his speech, touching on the war in Iran. The event marked Trump’s third trip to Texas in less than a month as part of an aggressive nationwide midterm campaign blitz across Republican-leaning states.
