A radio reporter in the Middle East, played by Ondřej Vetchý, finds himself stranded in Prague as a coup erupts in the fictional Kambur. Flights are cancelled, leaving him stranded. In Jan Hřebejk’s new film, State of Emergency, the journalist resorts to producing enigmatic reports from home, simulating the chaos of the Arab revolution using kitchen appliances.
The film, which will be released in theaters on October 17, is described as a “comedy full of misinformation and modified truths.” It premiered last weekend at a festival in Slavonice, South Bohemia, and received enthusiastic reactions from the audience.
The plot revolves around:
A radio reporter grappling with disinformation and the changing media landscape.
A group of radio students who are forced to confront the spread of fake news.
* The serious consequences of misinformation in a society plagued by crisis.
The film features a talented cast, including Jordan Haj, Tatiana Dyková, Jana Plodková, Jaroslava Pokorná, Bořek Slezáček, and Jiří Havelka.
Hřebejk, known for his previous works like the Gardening trilogy, emphasizes the importance of public media in a climate of disinformation. “I think the exaggeration is big enough for people to know that it doesn’t work like that,” he says. “We can’t do without public media.”
