The toll of the explosion of trade in the Dominican Republic is heavy. At least three people including a baby were killed and 39 injured, several of them seriously, during this tragedy in the province of San Cristobal, authorities announced on Monday.
“We have three dead, 33 people have been admitted to public hospitals and six others to private clinics,” said Joel Santos, Minister of the Presidency of this Caribbean island.
Four-month-old baby dies
A strong explosion shook the commercial area of San Cristobal, less than 30 kilometers from the capital Santo Domingo, around 3:10 p.m. After the explosion, which started a fire and a gigantic column of smoke, a four-month-old baby died of “severe traumatic brain injury” and two adults died of burns to 90% of their bodies, according to the National Health Service.
Six of the injured were transferred “to clinics in Santo Domingo for more specific care”, added Joel Santos, responsible for dealing with this emergency. “So far, the fire has been brought under control, but firefighters are still working on two fires,” he said of the explosion, the shock wave of which shook neighboring structures. The president, Luis Abinader, said he was “saddened” by the incident.
