Over the weekend, a new edition of the Alfajor World Championship was held, which was held in the pavilion of the Sociedad Rural de Buenos Aires and brought together more than 180 brands from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Paraguay and Mexico. The winner is not only from Buenos Aires, but a representative from La Plata won first prize among the white alfajores.
It is an alfajor filled with hazelnut cream and covered with white chocolate, created by Theonis, who won the gold medal in the “White Alfajor” category, one of the 19 that formatted the contest in which more than 400 proposals participated.
But this was not their only medal, as they also won bronze in the “Packaging” category with a 70% cocoa alfajor filled with dulce de leche with chocolate coating.
The voting was carried out by a panel of more than 20 tasters made up of food engineers, renowned chefs, master pastry chefs, experts in sensory analysis, journalists and influencers from the world of alfajores.
As for the World Cup winner, it’s an alfajor with 70% dark chocolate coverage, containing freeze-dried raspberries, semi-bitter ganache, meringue and raspberry volcano, originally from Monte Grande’s Senior Alfajor brand.
The samples sent by the various participating companies were subjected to a rigorous sensory evaluation under a meticulous blind tasting process of more than 35 control points. In this process, the jury evaluated and scored predefined sensory characteristics. The broad participation of producers from all Argentine provinces guaranteed a rich diversity of types of alfajores produced by entrepreneurs, SMEs and large producers.
