THE INCREDIBLE SAGA OF THE GODFATHER (3/6) – Initially skeptical about the novel and its author, the young Francis Ford Coppola still agrees to direct “The Godfather”. From his collaboration with Puzo will emerge a powerful and effective scenario.
The novel written at the end of the 1960s by the Italian-American Mario Puzo to pay off his debts became a bestseller, then a planetary phenomenon thanks to the adaptation by Francis Coppola who made three anthology films. “The Godfather” illustrates the American dream and its dark side. Proof of its evocative power, it shakes up the environment it aims to tell: the formidable New York mafia.
On this Thursday, November 19, 1970, the young Francis Ford Coppola, who is barely 30 years old, gathered his associates, in particular George Lucas, his close friend, in the offices of his production company, American Zoetrope, in San Francisco. The situation is tragic. Coppola will repeat it often thereafter. It’s his “Black Thursday”. The independent cinema he intends to produce, very far from the successful films of Los Angeles, does not appeal to Americans. The Warner Bros. has decided not to finance any of its new projects and, worse, demands the reimbursement of the 160,000 dollars that Zoetrope studios…
