On Saturday, seven hundred inhabitants of Trappes (Yvelines) are expected at the Comédie-Française, for a free performance of The Miser by Moliere. A show given as part of the twinning of the cultural institution with the city of Trappes in January 2023, for a period of three years. A first in the history of the “French”.

This partnership will allow the inhabitants of the town, mostly young people, to enjoy free shows and services provided by the “Maison de Molière”. Buses will be specially chartered and financed by the town hall to take residents to rue de Rivoli this weekend.

Fight against cultural inequalities

“This event is symbolic because it allows people from working-class backgrounds to access culture without worrying about cost or geographical distance”says Paul Bernardet, director of the cabinet of the mayor of Trappes. “When I was younger, I went to see Deceits of Scapin at the theatre. I liked it but didn’t go back until last week because it’s far and too expensive”testifies Amine, a schoolboy in Trappes.

On Saturday, he will take his place at the Comédie-Française alongside other Trappists with different profiles, “young, less young and even people in the process of learning French”, specifies the director of the mayor’s cabinet. About 3,000 residents are expected to benefit from this three-year partnership, according to the town hall.

“The municipality was surprised by the welcome given to the initiative, proof that the Trappists are open to discovering new cultures”, exclaims Paul Bernardet. Especially since a large majority of participants have never been to the theater, according to him.

Raising awareness among young people

Other initiatives have already taken place in the context of this agreement to promote access to culture for the inhabitants of Trappes. Actors work with college students, who have had introductory theater lessons.

“The idea is to inspire new vocations”, claims Paul Bernardet. For the moment, Amine has not yet taken the plunge. He remains a spectator. “I often go to La Merise, the city’s performance hall, where there are theater improvisation tournaments”says the 14-year-old boy.

Although the main target, young people are not the only target audience. The town hall wishes to raise awareness among adults who work alongside social centres, in particular. “These opportunities are important for parents who have not attended Republic schools or had access to books. They can then pass on their knowledge to the children.”explains Touria, from the social center Les Merisiers.

In this, the privileged relations with the Comédie-Française are beneficial for training municipal staff in raising awareness and organizing cultural events. A significant aspect to perpetuate, beyond the partnership, the promotion of the 6th art in this city of Yvelines.
