The last round of the group stage of the World Cup continued today (Wednesday) when the Australian team advanced to the round of 16 after beating Denmark 1:0.

Both teams took to the field knowing that they had to win to maintain a chance of advancing to the next stage – but while the Australians only depended on themselves, the Danes had to beat Australia and also hope that Tunisia did not beat France. As a result, Denmark started the game with a variety of chances and goal kicks, which were blocked by the Australian defence. Only towards the end of the game did the Australians wake up and start kicking the goal – but without success, and they went into the half with a 0:0 draw.

The second half opened with Australian pressure, and in the 60th minute Matthew Leckie scored a goal to give Australia the lead. At this stage, the Danes tried to attack and reach an equaliser, but in the end they were unable to get close to the goal, and said goodbye to the World Cup at the final whistle.

Now Australia will wait for the results of the last games in Group C that will take place tonight to know who they will meet in the round of 16. At this stage, Poland is the one leading, but Argentina and Saudi Arabia can also overtake it and reach the match against Australia from home.
