Strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) “Inokhodets” and “Forpost” were first used as a means of fire support for troops in the framework of the West-2021 exercises at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported to “Vedomosti” in the press service of the Ministry of Defense.
“In the fire support of the defending troops during the drawing of practical actions of the troops (forces) of the main stage of the joint strategic exercise Zapad-2021 at the Mulino training ground, unmanned aerial vehicles Pacer, Swallow and Orlan-10, “the ministry said in a statement.
The Ministry of Defense explained that the UAVs covered the maneuvering actions of the defending units using the latest 120 mm guided mines “Gran” with a laser homing head, they also provided “illumination” of the targets of armored vehicles for the use of high-precision bombs and missiles.
“Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicles with“ Peacemaker ”unmanned aerial vehicles also took part in striking the advancing enemy forces,” the Defense Ministry added. The UAVs used are part of the robotic systems division.
UAV “Inokhodets” is a drone of the “Orion” project of the “Kronstadt” company (part of AFK “Sistema”) in the modification for the Russian army. Its development has been underway since 2011, and the device made its first flight in 2016. In November 2019, its trial operation began. In April 2021, construction of a plant for mass production of UAVs of the Orion project began in Dubna near Moscow.
The Forpost UAV is a localized and modified IAI Searcher drone originally manufactured by Israel. In 2011, two such vehicles were purchased from the country, and since 2012 they have been produced in Russia as part of a complex of UAVs and control vehicles and are supplied to the troops. According to the Conflict Intelligence Team, the Outpost has already been used by the Russian army in Syria.
Earlier today, ground-based robotic systems Uran-9 and Nerekhta were used for the first time at the Zapad-2021 exercise in Mulino. “Nerekhta” was used for reconnaissance and fire support of the forward defending units. This robot is equipped with a combat module with a 12.7-mm Kord machine gun and a 30-mm AG-30M grenade launcher. In general, “Nerekhta” can be used for various tasks, the Ministry of Defense said, in particular, not only for the indicated purposes, but also for adjusting fire at enemy positions and the rapid delivery of ammunition and equipment.
