CRITICISM – Barbara Wysocka offers a new production of Katia Kabanova. From management to distribution, it’s a success.

Finally! We were starting to worry. Between a Tannhäuser disappointing and a Candide missed, not to mention the opening of the spring festival canceled due to strike, we wondered if we were going to have to pass the Opéra de Lyon by loss and profit, at the start of Richard Brunel’s mandate. The premiere of Katia Kabanova, Janacek’s masterpiece, will at least have reactivated the level to which this house had accustomed us. Because everything is successful in this show.

Barbara Wysocka’s staging takes up the postulate immortalized some thirty years ago by Christoph Marthaler: no town on the banks of the Volga, but a shabby building seen in section, in some suburb, this time without an interior courtyard. We lose social differences, we gain a geometry of play areas where everyone watches each other, and which allows us to simultaneously show the main action and the reactions of those who are absent.
