BOLZANO. “In the regions of Africa where we operate, a well literally changes the life of an entire village.” He said Alpidius Balbofounder of the Gmm “A well for life“, commenting on the initiative “At the Spa for Africa” that the Merano Odv will propose again this year in collaboration with Meran Thermal Baths.

The demonstration will be repeated Saturday, August 31, 2024: it will be enough to give yourself a few hours or an entire day of wellness in the pools or in the park of Terme Merano to contribute to donating water to those who don’t have it.

That day, in fact, from 9am to 9pm50% of the entrance fee to the Spa will be used to build drinking water wells in Benin (West Africa).

Throughout the day, an exhibition of African handicrafts and an information point on the projects carried out by Gmm will be available in the atrium of Terme Merano. This year, over 23,000 people will be able to directly benefit from the new sources of drinking water that will be built by Gmm in four departments of Benin (Atakora, Borgou, Zou and Donga).

In total, it is planned to build seven new boreholes (“forage”) for drinking water equipped with a piezometric tower and a photovoltaic system with a submersible pump for as many villages. In addition, a photovoltaic system with a submersible pump and a 3,000-liter tank will be installed that will serve a borehole already built.

“In addition to the positive effects on hygiene, health or agricultural activities – explains Balbo – the availability of drinking water also has a significant effect on the lives of women and girls. In Africa and, in particular, in the villages of Benin, it is these, in fact, who, from an early age, have to provide water for the family. When the village lacks a well, this means having to travel several kilometers every day to bring home a few liters of water and this prevents girls and young women from attending school regularly”.
