Proclaimed under a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2011, this initiative recognizes the urgent need for dialogue between different faiths and religions in order to improve mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation between peoples.
In this resolution supported by Jordan, the emphasis is essentially placed on the importance for member states to support during this World Week “the dissemination of the message of harmony between religions and good will in mosques, churches, synagogues, temples and other places of worship, on a voluntary basis, and according to the religious traditions or convictions of each person.
According to the international organization, this involves promoting harmony, understanding and dialogue as important dimensions of the culture of world peace. Under this resolution, governments, institutions and civil society are called to celebrate this week through programs and initiatives in order to promote its objectives.
As part of this collective surge for understanding and mutual understanding, Morocco is demonstrating increased awareness of the challenges linked to peace and is playing a pioneering role in promoting the values of peace and living together under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Amir Al Mouminine.
In a message addressed to participants in the Parliamentary Conference on “Interfaith dialogue: collaborating for our common future”, which was held last June in Marrakech, the Sovereign affirmed that Morocco, taking advantage of its singular attachment to ideal of religious coexistence and moderation, was naturally among the first countries to drive the establishment of international mechanisms, some dedicated to inter-civilizational dialogue and others to the fight against terrorism, radicalism and extremism .
For HM the King, interfaith dialogue, driven by the desire to promote constructive interaction, unanimous understanding and fruitful cooperation between different beliefs, will be an essential lever which will contribute to preserving Humanity from the torments of suffering and division.
“It is also up to us to shed new light on the concept of interfaith dialogue; it is up to us finally to strengthen collective awareness of the importance of dialogue and coexistence, of the dangers entailed by the persistence of a logic of introversion and fanaticism,” continued the Sovereign.
Another illustration of Morocco’s active and active commitment in favor of intercultural and religious tolerance, the Kingdom’s hosting of multiple meetings on this register, including the 9th World Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations held in November 2022 in Fez and the International Conference for the Dialogue of Cultures and Religions.
In the same vein, Morocco was the initiator of a resolution at the UN General Assembly, the first of its kind on the fight against hate speech, adopted in 2019. The Kingdom had also, initiated a resolution under which June 18 was proclaimed the International Day Against Hate Speech.
Morocco had also presented, to the General Assembly, a resolution adopted unanimously by member states, which condemns the burning of holy books and which considers, for the first time, these acts as violations of international law. This resolution also calls on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to organize a first conference on hate speech in 2025.
This resolution “strongly deplores all acts of violence targeting people because of their religion or beliefs, and all those targeting their religious symbols and Holy Books…which constitutes a violation of international law.”
The adoption by consensus of this historic resolution took place in a global context marked by the exponential exacerbation of hate speech in all its forms and dimensions. This demonstrates the respect and esteem enjoyed by the Kingdom as a regional and global leader in promoting the values of peace, tolerance and interreligious and intercultural dialogue and reflects the leading role played by Morocco in the concert of nations.
