Ambition for “French tech”. Emmanuel Macron launched Friday at the VivaTech show in Paris the objective of reaching “at least 100 unicorns” French “by 2030”, or 73 new digital start-ups valued at more than a billion dollars.

This year, France exceeded the milestone of 25 unicorns set by the President of the Republic in September 2019. It now has 27.

Ten “décacornes” in the viewfinder

Also present at VivaTech, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire announced on Tuesday the objective for the French new technologies sector to have ten “decacornes” by 2030, companies whose value reaches 10 billion dollars.

According to the latest “Titans of Tech” report from the specialist firm GP Bullhound, after years of unbridled growth, the European tech ecosystem exceeded $1 trillion in cumulative value in 2021. It has 283 unicorns (businesses worth over $1 billion) and 17 “decacorns”.

Finally, Emmanuel Macron also reiterated his objective of “developing 10 ‘tech’ giants in Europe”, which he had already mentioned a year earlier, wishing to see “10 companies worth 100 billion euros for 2030” emerge on the continent.

France, on the other hand, does not have any “décacorne”, unlike other European countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden. The two most important French unicorns – Doctolib and Back Market – are worth around 5 billion dollars.
