Athens, 20 euro tax for cruise passengers in Mykonos and Santorini – Italy-World

by times news cr

(ANSA) – ROME, SEPTEMBER 8 – Greece will impose a 20-euro fee on cruise passengers who stop at the very popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced. “Greece does not have a structural problem of overtourism, it has a problem in some destinations, in some weeks or in some months of the year,” Mitsotakis commented at a press conference during a trade fair. “The cruise industry has put Mykonos and Santorini under pressure, so the price will be 20 euros,” he added without specifying when this measure will come into force. In 2023, around 800 cruise ships with 1.3 million passengers touched at the island of Santorini where only 15,500 people live, according to the Greek Ports Association. Of the 32.7 million record tourists who visited Greece last year, around 3.4 million – or one in ten visitors – went to the island of Santorini. The prime minister intends to “intervene on the number of ships arriving at their destination at the same time”, deeming it necessary to “put a stop to the islands where we believe that the limits of the infrastructure are being tested”.
