Athens Building Collapse Kills Woman and Leaves Five Missing

An explosion in central Athens on Friday caused a two-story building to collapse in the historic Plaka district, killing a young woman and leaving five people missing. Emergency responders pulled two survivors from the rubble as authorities investigated a suspected gas leak behind the blast.

The powerful blast shook the Greek capital on Friday morning, reducing a residential structure to ruins and drawing a massive emergency response to the heart of Athens. The collapse struck the historic Plaka neighborhood, an area known as a popular destination for international visitors. The explosion damaged neighboring properties along Lysikratous Street, sending shockwaves across the city.

Casualties and the Ongoing Search in the Historic Plaka District

Greek fire services confirmed at least one fatality following the morning collapse. Rescuers recovered the body of a young woman from the debris, while search operations continued for five missing individuals.

According to the Greek news agency ANA, the confirmed victim is believed to be an American tourist. Officials stated that she had been staying in a first-floor vacation apartment with her husband and another couple. Police noted that the group was scheduled to check out on Friday afternoon and catch a flight from the airport of Athens, but they never arrived. Rescuers are also searching for an elderly couple who lived in one of the apartments.

Earlier in the day, emergency personnel pulled two women from the ruins and transferred them to a hospital for treatment.

Investigation Into the Suspected Gas Leak and Mayor’s Assessment

While official investigations remain active, initial reports point to a gas leak as the likely culprit behind the blast. The force of the explosion was audible across the entire city. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas pointed to a possible gas explosion when addressing the disaster on Friday.

Emergency Cordons and Structural Checks by Firefighters

Police established a security zone around the disaster zone to manage the chaos and protect the public. Firefighters tackled active flames while simultaneously conducting rigorous stability inspections on the remaining rubble and adjacent structures to prevent secondary collapses.
