French athlete Aurélien Chignon stayed up all night the day before the men’s 20km race walk final at the 2024 Paris Olympics to watch his wife give birth. Among the athletes competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, there was one who only slept 30 minutes before the competition because his wife gave birth earlier than scheduled. Although he did not win a medal, he achieved a valuable result by setting a personal best at the Olympics. This is the story of Aurélien Kinyon, a French athlete competing in the men’s race walk.

According to CNN and French daily Liberation, Kinyon, who competed as a French representative in the men’s 20km walk at the 2024 Paris Olympics, rushed to the hospital at around 10 pm on the day before the final. This is because his wife gave birth sooner than expected. About 3 hours later, at 2 am on the 1st, his wife safely gave birth to their daughter Charlie under Kinyon’s watch. And Kinyon caught a taxi to compete in the final at 8 am without even enjoying the joy of his daughter’s birth for 6 hours.

Most players try to get enough sleep and recharge their energy the day before a match, but Kinyong said he only slept for about 30 minutes that day. Despite that, Kinyong expressed his boundless joy, saying, “Everything went well and I couldn’t be happier. My baby with blue-green eyes is the prettiest, and my wife is healthy. That’s the most important thing.”

The luck wasn’t all that was there. Although he finished ninth in the race and didn’t receive a medal, Kinyong also set a personal best of 1 hour, 19 minutes, and 56 seconds in the race. When he reached the finish line, Kinyong celebrated his newborn daughter by doing the “thumb-sucking” pose that babies often do. “I used to say, ‘If I just finish the Olympics well, I feel like I can die without regrets,’ but now that I have a young daughter, I can’t do that,” Kinyong said with a laugh.

CNN said, “It shows the father’s love and Olympic spirit that he was able to place in the top 10 in an international competition despite not being able to sleep because his wife was giving birth,” and sent a witty message of support, saying, “However, Kinyong (who just gave birth) would do well to adjust to sleepless nights.”
