Despite having publicly shown her desire to race at home, after doing so a few years ago at San Silvestre in Vitoria, finally her professional commitments will take Majida Maayouf to San Silvestre in Vallecano. The national marathon record holder will debut in an internationally prestigious event where she will compete against top-level rivals such as Lonah Salpeter, third in 2021 and winner of the Tokyo marathon, in addition to the Ethiopians Ababel Yeshnae and Likina Amebaw.

Since 2008, a Spanish runner has not won the Vallecana, when Marta Domínguez achieved it, who also holds the record for the event with 31.35. Maayouf’s 2023 may have a perfect culmination after achieving Spanish nationality and breaking the national marathon record, which practically guarantees him a place to be in the Paris Olympic Games.

The bibs for the Vitorian test are sold out

San Silvestre from Vitoria, for its part, has already sold out its 2,500 numbers. After the change in 2022, moving the test to a daytime schedule, the response in this edition has been magnificent. That represents an increase of 600 more participants. “A complete success,” they confirm to EL CORREO from the Alava Athletics Federation. The txiki race has already covered more than 650 places and registration is extended until December 30 at 8:30 p.m. on the website www.mediamaratonvitoriagasteiz.com

This year there is also a much more attractive change of route, which will circulate through the center of the city. The test will be held on Sunday, December 31 at 12:30 p.m. with start and finish in the Mendizabala parking lot. From there it will pass through Portal de Lasarte, Elvira Zulueta, Portal de Castilla, Ramón y Cajal to enter the heart of the city, traveling through the streets Manuel Iradier, Dato, San Prudencio, San Antonio, Florida, again Ramón y Cajal, to take Avenida de Gasteiz right up to Beato Tomás de Zumárraga with a turn to return to Mendizabal. A route that exceeds 6 kilometers.

Among the favorites, in the men’s category, the LEA la Blanca athletes, Urko Herrán, Javi Pérez and Iker Ortiz de Zárate stand out, as well as Marc Hurtado and Borja Abecia from the Alimco Running Fiz. In girls, Lucía Gárate from Zailu, as well as Arrate Mintegui, Nerea Calvo and Lola Oiarzabal from LEA Blanca, are candidates for the podium. The Vitorian event will offer cash prizes to athletes from Alava, with 600 euros for the winners, 400 for the second and 200 for the third. As always, 0.5 cents of each registration will go to charity. In this edition it will go to the Orekabide association.
