Athletics: Nijel Amos, Olympic vice-champion in 2012, suspended for doping

by time news

A suspension that falls badly for Nijel Amos as the Worlds loom at the end of the week. The athlete, a specialist in the 800m, has tested positive for “metabolites of GW1516”, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Wednesday. This substance is a metabolic modulator “not approved for human use and presenting a health risk”, explains the IAU.

The control took place at the beginning of June and earned Nijel Amos a provisional suspension with immediate effect. The athlete has been notified and will not be able to participate in the Worlds which begin on July 15 in Eugene, Oregon. He was to run the 800m (July 20), a discipline in which he is, in 1′47′’73, the third best performer of all time. A time achieved in London in 2012 which then allowed him to win Olympic silver.
