Bangladesh’s first international gold medalist shooter Atiqur Rahman passed away after a long battle with cancer. This sportsman breathed his last at Suhrawardy Medical College on Wednesday morning. He was 59 years old at the time of his death.

Atiqur teamed up with Abdus Sattar Nini to win gold in the 10m air pistol event at the Commonwealth Games held in New Zealand in 1990. It was Bangladesh’s first international medal in shooting. Two shooters won bronze in another event at the same Games. He also won five golds—individual and team—in the Sixth SAFF Games held in Dhaka in 1993 or Madras SAFF (now Chennai) in 1995.

Atikur was fighting cancer for a long time. He was brought to Dhaka last night. If you feel sick, you are taken to the hospital. But this shooter, who raised the flag of Bangladesh on the world stage, breathed his last there.

Even after retiring from shooting, he was involved in various roles with the game. His funeral prayers were held at 3 pm at the Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation Complex. Then it was taken to Chittagong for burial.
