Atlético wins a small Madrid derby and (finally) finds success against Real

by time news

Atlético won the Madrid derby 1-0 thanks to a penalty converted by Yannick Carrasco in the 40th minute. Simeone’s men had not won in La Liga against Real for… 6 years! You had to go back to February 27, 2016 to see the Colchoneros win a derby in La Liga. Already champions for a week, Real Madrid took this match lightly and sent the B team to blow those who won the ticket for the Champions League final last Wednesday against Manchester City.

Harmless, Ancelotti’s men therefore played without Benzema or Courtois. Vinicius, Kroos and Modric walked the field for a few minutes but that was not enough to get rid of the solid defense and its Jan Oblak rampart. Author of a very good match, Yannick Carrasco was able to showcase himself with a goal, four key passes and 3 successful dribbles out of four. Antoine Griezmann also showed some interesting moves even if we are still (very) far from finding the one who carried Atléti between 2014 and 2019.

This victory allows Atlético de Madrid to get closer to the Champions League. The colchoneros are fourth with six points ahead of Nabil Fékir’s Betis and can still hope to climb the podium since there are 3 games left to play and they are only one point behind Sevilla and 5 behind FC Barcelona.
