A Chinese company has announced that it has designed miniature “atomic energy batteries” capable of keeping a smartphone charged for 50 years. No risk, neither for health nor for the environment, obviously!
If it is sometimes difficult to last the day on a single charge, it is even more difficult to know what we could do with the same smartphone for 50 years. Still, the innovation deserves to be studied, especially since it could power other objects, such as drones or medical equipment.
Signed Betavolt Technology, these little technological gems create electricity by disintegrating radioactive isotopes. A technology used in submarines, which must be reduced in size… and in cost. Everything is not a foregone conclusion, therefore, even if the company has already produced batteries that are no more than a centimeter and a half, and provide 100 microwatts of power.
It remains to be seen whether the upcoming tests will prove conclusive, particularly to know whether it could be dangerous. For the moment, Betavolt Technology wants to be reassuring on all levels: no external radiation during use, no radioactivity once the object disintegrates, and no risk of it catching fire. That is the demand of the people ?
