Amidst these two news, there is also news that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Bengal. More than one visit of PM Modi to Bengal is possible within a few days. PM Modi was to address a public meeting on the issue of Sandeshkhali and the date for this was earlier fixed for March 6, but now its date has been changed to March 8. March 8 is International Women’s Day and this day has been chosen to raise the issue of atrocities and sexual harassment on women. Even before this, Modi will address different rallies in the first week of March. It is reported that PM Modi will address a rally in North Pargana district Barasat on March 8. There is also discussion that there will be another stage near the main stage on which the women victims of Sandeshkhali will be seated.
Modi may also meet some women of Sandeshkhali who have accused him of sexual harassment. Lok Sabha elections are going to be held shortly and just before the elections, PM Modi is preparing to attack this issue fiercely. It is a case related to women’s safety and the main accused is TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh. If we look at PM Modi’s previous rallies in Bengal, he has been fiercely targeting TMC and party chief Mamata Banerjee. BJP is continuously saying that despite having a woman Chief Minister, action is not being taken against those involved in the alleged rape and harassment of women in Sandeshkhali. BJP says that crimes against women have been happening for a long time under the umbrella of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. TMC is continuously on the backfoot on this issue. This incident raises questions on the law and order situation of the state government. Just before the Lok Sabha elections, this is an incident which can give political advantage to BJP. BJP is continuously making efforts to strengthen its roots in West Bengal. Even though it lost the last assembly elections, it won 77 seats in the state, which was much more than 3 seats in 2016. The party’s performance in the last Lok Sabha elections was also much better and this time the party wants to cross that figure in the Lok Sabha elections.
This is the reason why BJP is comparing Sandeshkhali with Nandigram. It was through the Nandigram movement that the path to power was cleared for Mamata Banerjee. BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari said that in Nandigram people had fought against land acquisition and in Sandeshkhali they are fighting against forcible occupation of land. After sexual harassment, land grabbing is the second biggest issue in Sandeshkhali. BJP is busy cornering Mamata Banerjee from all sides and when PM Modi comes to Bengal, the challenge of Mamata Banerjee will increase even more and it will be very difficult to answer.
