Velachery: There has been a complaint that some anti-social elements are trying to encroach on the 20,000 square feet space allocated for the construction of a children’s center building in the Velachery Housing Board. The public has insisted that the social welfare department authorities should take action to prevent the encroachment attempt. Taking advantage of this, invaders tried to occupy both these places a few years ago. At that time, due to the intervention of social activists, a warning sign was put up by the social welfare department. In this situation, some people are trying to occupy the above two places. The public and social activists have demanded to build a children’s center building and protect the place from the encroachers.

Regarding this, social activists said: Here, a plot with all facilities was allocated. Some places allocated for education have been converted and sold. Similarly, some people are trying to change the category by occupying the space allocated for social welfare department. Since there are many poor people living here, we have been requesting for starting a children’s center for many years.

Some social welfare officials, acting in favor of the squatters, have put the opening of the children’s center on hold. As the above two places are worth several crores of rupees, the encroachers are likely to get hold of them at any time. Realizing this, the social welfare department should take prompt action.
