Wires, microphones, soundboard, computer, cell phone, rush, sound adjustments! After a lot of work and dreams, the Wayuri Online Radio – The voice of the 23 Indigenous Peoples of Rio Negro was opened in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM). This is the first web radio in the region, which also includes the municipalities of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos.

The first official transmission was made by communicator Juliana Albuquerque, from the Baré people, and communicator José Paulo, Piratapuya, during the launch event, at the Wayuri Network headquarters, on November 24th.

And the feedback from the communities is already arriving: communicators are receiving messages from listeners from Iauaretê, in the Upper Rio Uaupés, to Campinas (SP), where indigenous students attend university.

The project is from Rede Wayuri, in partnership with the Escolas de Redes Comunitárias da Amazônia project of Projeto Saúde e Alegria and supported by Diálogo Brasil, Federation of Indigenous Organizations of Rio Negro (Foirn) and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).

The online radio reinforces the vocation of the Wayuri Network, which since its creation has been working with audio bulletins. Currently, the main product of the communication collective is the Your podcast.

The group also produces Papo da Maloca, which airs on Wednesdays, from 10am to 12pm, on FM O Dia, in São Gabriel da Cachoeira.

With the inauguration of the online radio, the innovative work of the Wayuri Network – a reference in indigenous-to-indigenous communication – will have greater reach, reaching more people within the indigenous territory of Rio Negro and in regions beyond the Amazon.

In October, communicators participated in a workshop with technician Márcio Santos, on assembling equipment and practices for web radio.

During the inauguration, indigenous communicator Cláudia Ferraz, from the Wanano people, who has been part of Wayuri since the network’s creation, provided an overview of the communication collective’s work. She celebrated the achievement, which takes place when the Alto Rio Negro communicators network is completing six years.

Researcher at the School of Networks, Adriane Gama traveled from Pará to São Gabriel da Cachoeira and participated in the inauguration. “Here in São Gabriel we see this activism, this engagement of these young people, how they manage to move forward with these dreams. That they can continue with autonomy, sustainability and that they can guarantee and strengthen indigenous community communication in the region,” she said.

The entry into activity of Wayuri Online coincides with the expansion of connectivity in the indigenous territory of Rio Negro, with the installation by Foirn of Starlink antennas in the communities. The programs will provide quality and reliable information of interest to indigenous peoples. Furthermore, they may be transmitted in the languages of the region.

In Wayuri Online’s programming schedule, there are already three programs, always from 10am to 12pm. On Tuesdays, communicator José Paulo presents Alô, Parente, with information from the São Gabriel da Cachoeira headquarters and also from the communities, provided by communicators who are in indigenous territories.

“Alô, Parente will cover local news from São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos, seeking information from organizations such as Foirn, Funai, public institutions. People who listen to the program will be able to find out about various topics. We will also talk to older people to tell stories about indigenous culture. Wayuri online comes to improve dialogue between institutions and indigenous people in the city and communities. And it also comes to give a voice to people who know the culture of the people of the Rio Negro”, explains the indigenous José Paulo, from the Piratapuya people, who is in charge of Alô, Parente!

Papo da Maloca will be rebroadcast on Wednesdays, starting next year. On Thursday, Juliana Albuquerque brings the Kacuri Online program to listeners!

Communicator and designer Ray Baniwa, who has also been with the Wayuri Network since the beginning, was present at the launch. Soon after, he traveled to participate in COP 28 and is now in Dubai. From there he will send audio reports that will be broadcast on Papo da Maloca and Wayuri Online. Other news will come in 2024!

Indigenous leader Luiz Laureano, from the Baniwa people, who follows the work of the Wayuri Network, performed a traditional blessing.

Bishop of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Dom Edson Damian was at the inauguration of the radio and brought a reflection on the importance of indigenous communication.

“Wayuri means joint effort. It is the work done in collective efforts. And it is a characteristic of the people of this region, due to the tradition of interethnic marriages, that everyone is related, close to each other. This radio brings this characteristic of peaceful coexistence between peoples,” he said.

Deputy coordinator of ISA’s Rio Negro Program (PRN) in Amazonas, Natalia Pimenta recalled in her speech that the Wayuri Network has been promoting important dialogues, listening and bringing together different segments. The CEO of Foirn, Marivelton Barroso, Baré people, was also present.

The director of Foirn, Janete Alves, from the Desana people, who has been with Wayuri since its creation, spoke of the importance of the collective, which brings information to the territory and to indigenous people who live in urban areas in the Middle and Upper Rio Negro region.

“I’m thrilled to see the Network growing more and more. From a much smaller girl, who made monthly audios, she has advanced. And now we have the opportunity to have this web radio. Information often does not reach communities. Let’s embrace this cause of strengthening indigenous communicators, who can provide reliable information and combat fake news,” said Janete.

Also participating in the inauguration were the coordinator of the Department of Indigenous Women of Rio Negro (DMIRN-FOIRN), Cleocimara Reis; the coordinator of the Department of Indigenous Adolescents and Young People of Rio Negro (DAJIRN-FOIRN), Elson Kene, Baniwa people; the coordinator of the Communication Department (Decom-FOIRN), Gicely Ambrósio, Baré people; communicator José Baltazar, Baré people; the coordinator of the Serras Guerreiras tourism project, Marcos Baltazar, Baré people.
