The Attorney General’s Office has initiated a preliminary investigation against undetermined officials of the National Government for his alleged involvement in a disinformation and smear campaign against the first ladyVeronica Alcocer.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by the first lady in various media outlets.lcocer denounced the existence of a campaign against her, which seeks to link her with acts of corruption in the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD)in order to damage their reputation.

“According to the information that has been provided to me, and which I will inform my legal team for the appropriate action, the smear campaign is being promoted, including by people belonging to government entities,” the First Lady said in her statement.

According to media reports, this smear campaign is being promoted by individuals within the National Government, who are said to have facilitated the dissemination of such information to journalists and analysts.

“The strategy of ‘friendly fire’ in governments is used to divert attention from corruption issues. In these cases, it is people within the government itself who spread stories and rumors to confuse public opinion and minimize scrutiny of their own actions,” Alcocer explains in his complaint.

With this preliminary investigation, the Attorney General’s Office aims to identify the public servants involved and determine whether they have committed disciplinary offenses.
