Faced with the multiple challenges facing the African continent, it is essential to “promote the adoption of comprehensive, integrated and multidimensional approaches, based on the peace, security and development nexus, aimed at consolidating peace, strengthening security as well as promoting prosperous and sustainable development in the service of African citizens as promoted by the Tangier Declaration of October 2022”, reaffirmed the Moroccan delegation during a meeting of the AU PSC on “post-conflict reconstruction and development activities in Africa”.
To address the complex underlying factors of conflicts and tensions in Africa, Morocco has advocated for the adoption of approaches based on the nexus between peace, security and development. To this end, the Kingdom hosted the 1st AU Political Conference on Promoting the Nexus between Peace, Security and Development, organized from October 25 to 27, 2022, in Tangier, the Moroccan delegation highlighted.
This 1st conference promoted a multi-stakeholder debate in response to the growing challenges facing African economies, challenges that exert heavy pressure on the security and stability of the continent. It also made it possible to begin a reflection, in collaboration with all stakeholders involved, on pilot projects with a direct and concrete impact on the daily lives of African populations, while respecting the territorial integrity of States, recalled the Moroccan delegation.
In this regard, the main conclusions of the AU Political Conference led to the adoption of the Tangier Declaration on promoting the nexus between peace, security and development in Africa, which was unanimously endorsed by the member countries of the PSC, and by the AU Summit at its 36th session, while institutionalizing the “Tangier Process” as a regular event on the Nexus, the Moroccan delegation highlighted.
Morocco remains fully committed to responding favorably to the calls of the international community to prevent conflicts, restore and consolidate peace and security in the world as well as to work alongside its African partners and brother countries to ensure lasting peace in Africa, guaranteeing the well-being and prosperity of the populations of the continent, reiterated the Moroccan delegation.
The Moroccan delegation noted that this meeting of the AU PSC is of crucial importance to closely examine the efforts deployed by the AU to materialize sustainable initiatives concerning the consolidation and maintenance of peace, as well as post-conflict reconstruction and development.
The current challenges are complex and multifaceted, requiring a comprehensive approach that requires concerted efforts and enhanced cooperation among AU institutions and organs, as well as between the AU and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs). This collaboration aims to foster good governance, lasting peace, security, stability and development in Africa, the Moroccan delegation stressed.
