AU PSC reiterates once again the responsibility of countries hosting refugee camps to collaborate with international bodies in the documentation of refugees

Addis Ababa – The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has reiterated once again the responsibility of countries hosting refugee camps to collaborate with relevant international bodies and agencies in the documentation of refugees in order to avoid the diversion of humanitarian aid and to avoid their exploitation for political purposes and militarization.

In a communiqué adopted at the end of a meeting on the collaboration between the AU and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) following the Malabo Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference: Translating Promises into Reality, the PSC recalled its previous decisions on humanitarian actions, including the Communiqué [PSC/PR/COMM.1083 (2022)] adopted at its 1083rd meeting held on 9 May 2022.

The PSC had, in this statement, “reiterated the responsibility of the countries hosting refugee camps to collaborate with the relevant international bodies and agencies in the documentation of refugees in order to protect their fundamental rights, to avoid the diversion of humanitarian aid, to guarantee adequate access to food, to avoid their exploitation for political ends, their militarization and their transformation into agents of terrorism and organized crime.”
