Brawn Highlights Hülkenberg’s Maturity and Potential
Ross Brawn, the former team principal of Brawn GP and Mercedes, remembers a time when Hülkenberg was a strong contender for a seat at Mercedes. The situation was uncertain regarding Lewis Hamilton’s contract for 2013. “Nico was standing by in case things didn’t work out.”
Brawn’s Praise for the Driver
Brawn was particularly struck by Hülkenberg’s composure during those discussions. “He behaved very maturely during these conversations,” the 71-year-old recalled. “I told him openly that he had a chance, but that everything depended on Lewis’ decision.”

When Hamilton ultimately re-signed, the opportunity evaporated. “We were able to clarify with Nico that it wouldn’t work out. But I was looking forward to working together,” Brawn stated. He firmly believes Hülkenberg is “a great driver. Very, very mature, balanced and with an notable career.”
Brawn expressed surprise that Hülkenberg’s first podium came so late in his career. “It’s hard to imagine that Silverstone was his first podium because he’s had so many strong performances.” He added that the moment felt particularly special due to his long-standing relationship with the driver.
Audi’s Confidence in a Veteran
Audi is placing its faith in Hülkenberg’s experience as it enters the Formula 1 arena. The German driver brings a sense of calm, technical expertise, and credibility – qualities a new factory team desperately needs.
